"Fatter Hippier"

March 1999.
York and Leicester

Bullied by Beethoven (Song):

It wasn't my fault that I couldn't sing
Or play the piano and the violin
I couldn't tell a crotchet from a semi-breve
And an oboe was somewhat of a mystery.

They probed for talent but I was bereft
Sadly the lord had left me tone deaf
Reduced to tears by his violent volition,
I was thrashed to the beat of a German musician.

I was bullied by Beethoven,
Because I couldn't sing.
I was bullied by Beethoven…
Bullied by Beethoven…

Commisioned for the Leicester University Modern Languages Ball, Fatter Hippier was a more slick, streamlined and coherent comedy revue than n o f u l l s t o p s had been. Although still building mainly on the traditional sketch form, the boundaries between performers and characters portrayed became increasingly blurred throughout, as the inter-relationships of the performers increasingly get in the way of the "show" proper. Making interesting use of stage sound and lighting, and including several memorable songs, Fatter Hippier was a huge success at York University before being performed at Filbert Street, Leicester to an audience of nearly 400.
